    Hexagram : courte généalogie du Studio-Lab à l’innovation interdisciplinaire

    Célébrant son 15e anniversaire en 2016, Hexagram est l’un des plus importants centres de recherche interuniversitaires voués à la recherche-création en arts médiatiques, technologie et culture numérique à travers le monde. Élément-clé de l’écosystème numérique de Montréal, Hexagram peut attribuer sa longévité non seulement à sa faculté d’adaptation à l’évolution continuelle des secteurs socio-technico-politiques, mais aussi à son excellence en matière de recherche-création, un domaine en plein développement sur la scène locale aussi bien que nationale et internationale. Cette présentation retrace l’évolution d’Hexagram depuis les débuts du « studio lab » (Century 1999) jusqu’à sa forme actuelle, qui consiste en un réseau de connaissances interdisciplinaires explorant les recoupements entre les sciences humaines, sociales et naturelles et l’art et le design dans le contexte de la culture technologique.

    Hexagram: A Short Genealogy from Studio-Lab to Interdisciplinary Innovation

    Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2016, Hexagram is one of the largest and longest running interuniversity research centres dedicated to research-creation in media art, technology and digital culture internationally. As a key element within the digital ecology of Montreal, Hexagram’s longevity can be attributed not only to its continual adaption to shifting social-technical-political contexts but also to its continued championing of research-creation as a developing field on the local, national and international stage. This talk traces the evolution of Hexagram from its early “studio-lab” (Century 1999) origins through its current manifestation as an interdisciplinary knowledge network embracing a broader exploration of the intersections between the humanities, social and natural sciences and art and design within the framework of technological culture.

    Chris Salter est artiste et directeur de la Chaire de recherche Les nouveaux médias, la technologie et les sens à l’Université Concordia et co-directeur d’Hexagram, le Réseau international de recherche-création en arts médiatiques, design, culture numérique et technologie. Il a étudié la philosophie et l'économie à l’Université Emory et a complété un doctorat en critique théâtrale à l’Université Stanford, où il a également été chercheur au CCMRA. Il a collaboré avec Peter Sellars et avec William Forsythe et le ballet de Francfort. Son travail a été présenté dans divers festivals et institutions à travers le monde, notamment : Biennale d’Architecture de Venise, Chronus Art Center de Shanghai, Vitra Design Museum, HAU-Berlin, BIAN 2014 LABoral, Lille 3000, Festival EXIT, Musée d’art national de Chine et Ars Electronica. Il est l’auteur des ouvrages Entangled (MIT Press, 2010) et Alien Agency: Experimental Encounters with Art in the Making (MIT Press, 2015).

    Chris Salter is an artist, University Research Chair in New Media, Technology and the Senses at Concordia University and Co-Director of the Hexagram network for Research-Creation in Media Arts, Design, Digital Culture and Technology. He studied philosophy and economics at Emory University and completed a PhD in directing/dramatic criticism at Stanford University where he also researched at CCMRA. He collaborated with Peter Sellars and William Forsythe/Frankfurt Ballet. His work has been seen all over the world at such venues as the Venice Architecture Biennale, Chronus Art Center Shanghai, Vitra Design Museum, HAU-Berlin, BIAN 2014 LABoral, Lille 3000, Festival EXIT, National Art Museum of China, Ars Electronica, among many others. He is the author of Entangled (MIT Press, 2010) and Alien Agency: Experimental Encounters with Art in the Making (MIT Press, 2015).
