    « Dans le cadre du colloque "Un art contemporain numérique. Conservation, diffusion et marché", j’aborderai tout d’abord comment je me suis intéressé à l’art multimédia et à l’art vidéo et comment j’en suis venu à intégrer ces œuvres à ma collection. Je présenterai mes premières acquisitions et aborderai les défis en matière de conservation que représentent ces œuvres. Je me pencherai aussi sur le futur de ce type de collectionnement ainsi que les enjeux qu’il représente. »

    Collecting the Uncollectable

    “As part of the colloquium – A Contemporary Digital Art, Conservation, Dissemination and Market Access – I will at first discuss how I became interested in multimedia art and video art and how I ended up incorporating these works into my collection. I will present my first acquisitions and talk about the conservation challenges that arise with these works. I will also focus on the future of this type of collection practice, as well as the issues that it raises.”

    François Rochon est ingénieur électricien de formation. Passionné de finance, il réoriente sa carrière et commence à gérer des portefeuilles privés dès 1993. En 1998, il décide de fonder Giverny Capital Inc., une firme de gestion de portefeuilles affichant une philosophie de placement à long terme. Il a aussi été chroniqueur pour divers journaux et sites web, et collabore actuellement au site lesaffaires.com et au journal The Gazette. François Rochon a siégé à divers conseils au cours des années. Il siège aujourd’hui au conseil d’administration du Musée Albright-Knox à Buffalo, ainsi qu'aux comités d’acquisition de trois autres institutions : le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec et le Musée Hirshhorn à Washington. Depuis 2000, il collige une collection d’art contemporain chez Giverny Capital. La collection comprend environ 400 œuvres dont plusieurs installations vidéo et multimédias.

    François Rochon is trained as an electrical engineer. His passion for finance led him to make a career change and become a portfolio manager. He began to manage private portfolios as of 1993. In 1998, he decided to found Giverny Capital Inc., a portfolio management company with a long-term investment philosophy. François Rochon has written columns for various magazines and websites over the years. He is currently columnist at the website “les.affaireres.com” and the newspaper “The Gazette.” Mr. Rochon has also been a member of several boards over the years. He currently sits on the board of directors of the Albright-Know Museum in Buffalo as well as on the acquisitions committees of three other museums: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC. Since 2000, he has overseen a collection of contemporary art at Giverny Capital. The collection comprises around 400 works, among which there are several video and multimedia installations.
