    Modèles comparatifs: le Banff New Media Institute et le Digital Media Research + Innovation Institute >>>

    Pendant quinze ans, soit de 1995 à 2010, le Banff New Media Institute a eu pour mandat de réunir des artistes, designers, scientifiques, ingénieurs, chercheurs en sciences sociales, entreprises en médias numériques et industries connexes au sein d’une expérience intensive connue sous le nom de « méthode de Banff ». Au cours des dix dernières années, les programmes d’études supérieures, les centres de recherche et les incubateurs de projets ont connu une croissance exponentielle dans les milieux universitaires au Canada et à l’étranger, et les avenues de recherche et d’incubation en matière de médias numériques ont été formalisées grâce à des fonds institutionnels, fédéraux et privés. L’Université de l’OCAD apporte sa contribution dans ce domaine grâce au Digital Media Research and Innovation Institute and Imagination Catalyst. Cette conférence présentera et comparera les caractéristiques des deux organismes, et proposera des méthodes d’exploration s’inspirant des possibilités qu’offrent ces structures, formelles aussi bien qu’informelles.

    Comparative Models: Banff New Media Institute and the Digital Media Research and Innovation Institute >>>

    The Banff New Media Institute brought together artists, designers, scientists, engineers, social scientists, digital media firms and related industries for fifteen years (1995 – 2010) in an intensive experiment known as “the Banff Method.” Over the last ten years graduate programs, research centres and incubators have grown exponentially within the university environment in Canada and abroad, formalizing approaches to digital media research and incubation with support from institutional, federal and private sector funds. OCAD U’s iteration within this context are the Digital Media Research and Innovation Institute and Imagination Catalyst. This talk will outline and compare features of both environments and suggest methods of engagement that draw on the possibilities of informal and formal structures.

    Sara Diamond est présidente de l’Université de l’OCAD, « l’université de l’imagination » du Canada. Elle est informaticienne, artiste en médias numériques et historienne, et directrice du Visual Analytics Lab de l’Université OCAD, subventionné par le CRSNG, le CRSH, Mitacs et le Programme d'excellence en recherche du Fonds pour la recherche en Ontario. Elle a été nommée à l’Ordre de l’Ontario et à l’Académie royale des arts du Canada, et elle a été décorée de la Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Elizabeth II. Elle a gagné le prix GRAND du Réseau de centres d’excellence canadien en médias numériques. Diamond a siégé au Conseil 2011-2012 des académies canadiennes sur l’état de la science et de la technologie au Canada, et elle a siégé au conseil d’administration du Centre national d’excellence GRAND. Avant d’accepter son mandat à l’Université OCAD, elle a fondé et dirigé le Banff New Media Institute, un centre de recherche et de réflexion voué aux médias numériques (1995-2005).

    Dr. Sara Diamond is the President of OCAD University, Canada’s “university of the imagination.” She is a computer scientist, digital media artist and historian, and director of the Visual Analytics Lab at OCAD U, with funding from NSERC, SSHRC, Mitacs and the Ontario Research Excellence Fund. She is an appointee of the Order of Ontario and the Royal Canadian Society of Artists and a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to Canada. She is the winner of the 2013 GRAND NCE Digital Media Pioneer Award. Diamond served on the 2011-2012 Council of the Canadian Academies’ expert panel on the State of Science & Technology in Canada. She sat on the board of the National Centre of Excellence GRAND. Before her tenure at OCAD University she founded and led the Banff New Media Institute, an incubation, digital media research centre and think tank (1995 – 2005).
